Melee Island 3D lives

Although not exactly the old fan project which was well known amongst community members in bygone years, a mapper partaking in a mapping contest on Snarkpit has taken it upon himself to recreate the Melee Island town, using the aging Half-Life engine as the base.

Whilst the technical limits of the engine prevent it from looking as brilliant as it could, a hearty attempt at capturing the feel and look of Melee Island has been achieved by jokipoki.

It currently seems to be a work in progress, so it's assumed that more will be added in the future, but for now check out the three screenshots here, here and here. It seems he's even integrated the underground tunnels which, as we all know, lead to Melee Island! Most excellent.

Wow, that looks most impressive... I love the way they've got the cartoony style in 3D

I like the fact that it's on the Half-life 1 engine, and not 2, as this way more people will be able to play it. As long as there's a decent framerate, it doesn't cost a fortune to buy and the graphics remain true to the original games, I'm happy.

Though the concept of a Monkey Island game with the Half Life 2 source engine is, admitiadly, rather drool-inducing...

And yeah, I agree that it looks even better than EMI's Melee Island. Just goes to show.

I myself am going to be working on something Monkey Island related with the source (HL2) engine once it's available. I always wanted to do it with the HL1 engine, but I found the polygon limitations and such too ... er, limiting.

And yar, EMI's Melee Island was just weep. :~
